There are watches that belong to the 1990s, and there are watches that helped define what modern watchmaking would become. The Lange 1 belongs firmly in the latter category.

When A. Lange & Söhne unveiled its first collection of the modern era in 1994, the Lange 1 immediately looked unlike almost anything else in traditional high watchmaking. Its dial rejected the symmetry that had governed dress watches for generations. Hours and minutes were pushed to the left, subsidiary seconds to the lower right, the power reserve swept across the upper right and, above it all, sat the now unmistakable outsize date.

On paper, the arrangement should have felt unbalanced. On the wrist, it became one of the great watch designs of the late 20th century.

The Ref. 101.025 takes that architecture and strips it almost entirely of colour. Often nicknamed the “Stealth” by collectors, its 950 platinum case is paired with a restrained rhodié dial. There is no obvious display of precious metal and little visual excess. Unless you know what you are looking at, the platinum largely keeps its secret.

That discretion is part of the appeal.

At 38.5mm, the original Lange 1 also belongs to a different era of proportions. It predates the move towards increasingly large high-end watches and retains the compact dimensions that made the original design so convincing. Today, those proportions feel particularly relevant again.

Turn it over and the restraint disappears.

The manually wound Calibre L901.0 is pure early Lange: the German-silver three-quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, blued screws, hand-engraved balance cock and Glashütte finishing create a movement that is as architecturally distinctive as the dial above it.

This example dates from 2005, an appealing period in the history of the modern manufacture, and retains unusually strong provenance. It is accompanied by its original A. Lange & Söhne documentation stamped by Mezger AG in Basel on 7 October 2005, together with the original sales documentation, presentation material and accessories.

For collectors increasingly interested in the first generation of modern A. Lange & Söhne, the Ref. 101.025 represents the Lange 1 in perhaps its most discreet form: platinum, monochromatic, mechanically uncompromising and instantly recognisable without needing to announce itself.

The New York Uniform

Start with a charcoal cashmere crewneck, washed black straight-leg trousers and a pair of black leather loafers. Add a long navy or charcoal overcoat when the temperature drops.

The platinum Lange almost disappears into the palette. What remains is the shape of the dial, the flash of the polished bezel and the knowledge that what looks understated is anything but ordinary.

Quiet clothes. Serious watch.

The Soft Suit

Take a relaxed double-breasted suit in mid-grey wool, a white poplin shirt worn without a tie and dark brown suede loafers.

The Lange 1 works especially well with tailoring that isn't too perfect. Its 38.5mm case sits naturally beneath a cuff, while the asymmetric dial introduces just enough tension to stop the outfit feeling conservative.

The Weekend Collector

Dark indigo denim, a heavyweight white T-shirt, an olive suede jacket and well-worn brown loafers.

Against something this uncomplicated, the Lange 1 becomes much more interesting. The formal black strap suddenly feels less formal, while the monochromatic dial looks almost architectural.

It is the kind of watch that rewards dressing down rather than dressing up.

This A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Ref. 101.025 presents in very good condition.

The 950 platinum case retains attractive proportions and clearly defined surfaces, with light signs of wear consistent with careful use. The contrast between the brushed case band and polished surfaces remains clearly visible.

The rhodié dial presents beautifully, with crisp printing, clean subsidiary displays and the characteristic asymmetric Lange 1 layout. The outsize date, power-reserve indication and hands remain exceptionally clean.

Through the sapphire crystal caseback, the manually wound Calibre L901.0 is fully visible, displaying the traditional finishing that established A. Lange & Söhne's reputation following its modern revival.
